Mountain Three-veined Goldenrod
Solidago velutina subsp. sparsiflora (A. Gray) Semple is native to dry open slopes, rocky places, sometimes along streams or seeps, in meadows, open pine woods, margins of dry woods, grasslands, and disturbed soils from southern Montana to northern Mexico and west to eastern California. The subspecies is distinguished from subsp. californica by its sparsely short-hairy stems and leaves and outer nearly hairless or hairless phyllaries (Semple & Cook 2006 FNA). The subspecies includes diploids 2n=18, tetraploids 2n=36, and hexaploids 2n=54.
Nesom (1989) did not distinguish it from subsp. velutina. The Astereae Lab is currently investigating how to separate the two races in Mexico.
