Can-Peat is pleased to welcome Dr. Iqra Naeem as a Research Associate under Dr. Maria Strack. Dr. Naeem, who will be joining us on August 5, 2024, brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field of Grassland Ecology, adding significant value to our research community.
Dr. Naeem, originally from Pakistan, did her doctoral studies in Grassland Ecology from Northeast Normal University, China. Her dissertation and subsequent research have equipped her with extensive expertise in several critical areas: grassland ecology, litter decomposition, soil and plant interactions, herbivore grazing, microbial respiration, restoration of degraded grasslands, and climate change. These specializations are crucial for understanding and addressing the pressing environmental issues of our time.
Before her appointment at the University of Waterloo, Dr. Naeem completed several short-term contracts with renowned peatland ecologist Prof. Line Rochefort in the Department of Plant Sciences at Université Laval. During this period, she contributed significantly to research projects focused on wetland restoration and sustainable management practices. Her work with Prof. Rochefort has been instrumental in advancing our understanding of ecological interactions and restoration techniques.
Dr. Naeem's role at the University of Waterloo under Project Director Dr. Maria Strack will involve comprehensive project oversight, planning, and implementation for the Can-Peat research project. Her responsibilities include managing project operations, communications, and major meetings. She will ensure compliance with university policies and grant requirements, oversee budgetary matters, and coordinate with sponsors and partners. Additionally, Dr. Naeem will help attract new partners and handle communication tasks like website maintenance, social media updates, and organizing workshops and webinars.
We are excited to see the positive impact Dr. Naeem will have on our research projects and the broader academic community. Her international experience and diverse expertise align perfectly with the University of Waterloo’s commitment to advancing knowledge and fostering environmental stewardship. We extend a warm welcome to Dr. Iqra Naeem and look forward to her contributions to our institution.
