Canadian Peatland Data Portal

To improve data availability and findability with the aim to elevate our collective understanding of peatland carbon cycling, Can-Peat has created the Canadian Peatland Data Portal to bring together Canadian peatland carbon data into a comprehensive, centralized metadata repository. The Canadian Peatland Data Portal serves to fill a gap without replacing or duplicating existing efforts by only storing metadata that links back to various, original data sources.

The Canadian Peatland Data Portal was developed with the University of Waterloo Climate Institute as a searchable web-based tool that allows users to find data that pertains to their needs by providing detailed information for each dataset and where to find it.

Our work will reflect our ongoing commitment to upholding the FAIR and CARE principles. These principles inform how we build the technology behind the repository, and how we will ensure clarity around data ownership, licensing, and control over data in the platform.

FAIR principles for scientific data management and stewardship are supported by the Tri-Council (i.e., NSERC, CIHR, SSHRC) and provide guidance for making data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.

CARE principles for Indigenous Data Governance complement the FAIR principles and other movements towards Open Data. They support Indigenous Peoples’ rights and interests by recognizing that data should be designed in accordance with the following principles: Collective benefit, Authority toControl, Responsibility, and Ethics. Additionally, Indigenous Data Sovereignty is supported by using Local Contexts to show the presence of Indigenous Data.
