What it measures
Dimension: Social engagement
This indicator represents the percentage of the population who report being a member or participant in one or more organized group activities such as cultural, educational or hobby groups; a political party; a religious-affiliated group; a neighbourhood or community organization; a service club or fraternal organization; or, any other type of organized group activity.
Why this matters
Participation in organized groups and activities can create opportunities to maintain and/or develop new social connections, generate interest in other aspects of the community, and contribute to improved social and emotional wellbeing. Further, Involvement in clubs and groups shows a person’s tendency to give time to causes from which he or she will not necessarily directly benefit.
