This three-part webinar series will introduce and orient individuals to the new CSA D500:20, Ergonomic design for ambulances and related equipment standard.

Paramedics play an integral role in primary health care, and face many musculoskeletal (and other) injury risks in the process. This new standard will help support and improve paramedic health and performance by strengthening the use and application of ergonomic principles into ambulance design.

The first webinar in this series will provide a high-level overview of the standard and the process used to develop the standard. A panel of technical committee members will share their thoughts and insights about the standard and its potential for impact within the paramedic sector.

About the presenters

Renaud Carrier

Renaud Carrier
Renaud is a Director of Engineering, Demers Ambulances. He has been with Demers for just over 13 years in various engineering roles. He has led a variety of ambulance development projects across Canada, the US and overseas. Currently, Renaud oversees all engineering operations at Demers Ambulances, including design, certification and manufacturing support. He has a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from École Polytechnique de Montréal.

Gale Chevalier

Gale Chevalier
Gale Chevalier is Chief of Frontenac Paramedics and Director of Emergency and Transportation Services for the County of Frontenac in Eastern Ontario.  As Chief, Gale leads a service of 150 Paramedics in an area that is geographically, socially and economically diverse.  Gale has been involved in pre-hospital care and paramedicine for more than 25 years.  Gale was a Vice-Chair for the Technical Committee for the CSA Standard on Ergonomic design for ambulances and related equipment and has represented the Ontario Association of Paramedic Chiefs on the Ontario Base Hospital Group Medical Advisory Committee.  Throughout her career Gale has focussed on the health and wellbeing of paramedics and she has been instrumental in implementing a peer support program as well as the Collaborative Culture of Safety at Frontenac.

Ron Meyers

Ron Meyers
Ron Meyers is employed as a Project Manager at CSA Group (Canadian Standards Association).  For more than 20 years, Ron has managed a range of multi-stakeholder Technical Committees in developing National Occupational / Public Health & Safety Standards.  Ron’s current responsibility includes the development of National Standards in areas of emergency / risk management, first responder safety, protective equipment and systems and the transportation of dangerous goods.

Pierre Poirier

Pierre Poirier
Pierre has been an Advanced Care Paramedic for more than 25 years.  Pierre has worked in private, municipal, third service, fire-based systems and aero-medical systems.  Pierre has a certificate in Health Management from the University of Saskatchewan, a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba and a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Alberta. Recently, he completed the York University, Schulich School of Business Master’s certificate in Municipal Leadership.

Pierre has been working with the Canadian Standards Association for several years. He has chaired several standards including the Ergonomic design for ambulances and related equipment standard, the Community Paramedicine (2016) standard and the Psychological Health and Safety in the Paramedic Service Organization standard (2018).  Currently, he leads the Paramedic Opioid standard project. Earlier this year, he was awarded the CSA Award of Merit for his contribution to standards development.

Amin Yazdani

Amin Yazdani
Dr. Amin Yazdani is the director of the Canadian Institute for Safety, Wellness & Performance (CISWP) at Conestoga College's School of Business. He is also an adjunct assistant professor at McMaster University, the University of Waterloo and Pacific Coast University for Workplace Health Sciences. Dr. Yazdani is a member of the Canadian Standard Association (CSA Group) Occupational Health and Safety Strategic Steering Committee, and a recipient of the 2018 Standards Council of Canada Young Leader Award.
