Join the City of Waterloo’s Strategic Initiatives division as they outline the City’s integrated approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change. This talk will cover a high-level overview of the City’s strategic plans and positioning in this space, as well as a deeper dive into their recently approved Corporate Climate Action Plan. The end of the presentation will focus on the challenges and opportunities with these actions and discussion on potential areas of research collaboration.

Holly Jean Buck, Assistant Professor of Environment and Sustainability at the University at Buffalo explores multiple methods (interviews, focus groups, discourse analysis, and participant-observation) to survey the US, discussing what post-covid political subcultures mean for climate politics broadly and the politics of solar geoengineering research in particular. 

Join the Waterloo Climate Institute and the Faculty of Mathematics for a guest lecture on the intricacies of how nitrogen cycling is represented within Earth System Models. Sian Kou-Giesbrecht from the University of Dalhousie will explore how the terrestrial carbon sink needs nutrients such as nitrogen to fuel plant growth and continue to sequester carbon. Find out more about how this complex set of interactions plays out in terrestrial ecosystems.

Join the Waterloo Climate Institute for a panel discussion and interactive break-out session with different practitioners in the health system. Discussion will centre around how health practitioners can bring climate change into their health practices. Join Dr. Mary-Louise Timmermans, Damon Wells Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Yale University, for a presentation about how the Arctic Ocean’s Beaufort Gyre is a dominant feature of the Arctic system, a prominent indicator of climate change, and possibly a control factor for high-latitude climate.
