Lilian Adom, a 2024 graduate of the Theatre and Performance program, has swiftly made her mark in the theatre industry. She is currently working as a lighting technician at Coal Mine Theatre in Toronto, and at University of Toronto, while also expanding her expertise in audio and video. She has recently become a proud member of IATSE, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.
This year, Lilian was chosen to join the Young, Gifted & Black training program at Obsidian Theatre as their Lighting Designer. This prestigious six-month intensive program brings together five talented theatre makers under the mentorship of the renowned d’bi.young anitafrika. Together, they will devise and design a collaborative production, further refining their artistic and technical skills. Obsidian Theatre is Canada’s leading culturally specific theatre company. Obsidian is dedicated to the exploration, development, and production of the Black voice.
Lilian's passion for theatre production was ignited during her time in THPERF 100, where she first fell in love with the field. While she had initially focused on acting during high school, her experience in THPERF 243 and THPERF 244 — the program’s technical production courses — introduced her to the world behind the scenes. She quickly immersed herself in technical roles, serving as the head of audio for Theatre and Performance’s production of Portia’s Julius Caesar and as the head of lighting for Mustard.
Beyond theatre, Lilian aspires to expand her lighting design work into concerts, drawn to the ever-evolving nature of the entertainment industry. With the freedom to select her projects, her career remains dynamic and fulfilling. She thrives on problem-solving and collaborating with the diverse range of professionals in the field, making each experience unique and rewarding.
As she embarks on this exciting chapter, Lilian extends her best wishes to her fellow Theatre and Performance majors. She cherishes the support and individualized guidance she received throughout the program, which helped her shape her career path. Congratulations, Lilian—you deserve every success!
