Indigenous student funding

The Grand River.

The Grand River. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River.

Funding for Indigenous* graduate students, including internal and external awards and bursaries can be found on our searchable graduate funding and awards database.

Additionally, the Office of Indigenous Relations at the University of Waterloo has a webpage that details Bursaries, Awards & Scholarships.

Tuition waiver for eligible Indigenous students

The University of Waterloo will waive tuition for incoming and current Waterloo students who are members of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation or Six Nations of the Grand River.

Indigenous students who are members of these bands (on whose traditional territory the University of Waterloo is situated) and who are pursuing studies in an undergradute or graduate program at Waterloo are eligible for this waiver. This is part of Waterloo’s active work toward reconciliation and is a response to the calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

*For the purpose of awards, an Indigenous person is one who is a citizen or member of a First Nations community (Status/Non-Status), Métis, or Inuit as defined in the Canadian Constitution Act 1982. To protect the integrity of Indigenous graduate students eligible for specific funding, those identifying as Indigenous must be verified by the Office of Indigenous Relations at the University of Waterloo through the Indigenous verification process.
