When Alexa Bennett, a PhD student in Geography and Environmental Management, traveled to Ghana, her purpose went far beyond visiting Cape Coast. With support from an International Experience Award, she collaborated directly with pregnant and postpartum women to advance her research on how water insecurity affects maternal health in sub-Saharan Africa.

“My doctoral research focuses on the impact of water insecurity on perinatal health in low-resource settings. I chose to conduct this work in Ghana, where access to clean water remains a significant public health challenge. Partnering with the University of Cape Coast has allowed me to pursue research that is locally informed, ethically grounded, and meaningful to the communities involved.”

For her research, Alexa didn’t just focus on the data. She actively formed connections with the community she surrounded herself with and immersed herself in the Cape Coast’s vivacious and historic culture.

“The highlight of my trip was making progress on my doctoral research, which examines the impact of water insecurity on perinatal health, through strengthened collaboration with local partners. I also appreciated the opportunity to experience a new region and culture by trying new foods, learning different languages, and engaging with local customs.”

As for Alexa’s future with her research, she is ready to dive deeper into her passion.

“I am looking forward to heading back to Ghana this fall, where I will continue my data collection.”

Alexa’s advice for future international researchers is to be open-minded when considering opportunities to better not only their studies, but their experience with the world.

“As a geographer, learning through direct engagement with the world is essential to understanding the issues I study. I would encourage other students to pursue an international experience, as it broadens your perspective, challenges you to adapt to new environments, and deepens your understanding of your research topics.”
