Jeremy Cohen

Jeremy Cohen travelled to Sendai Japan to conduct research for his PhD in Kinesiology. With the support of an International Experience Award, Jeremy was able to gain experience in biomedical engineering and imaging techniques.

Jeremy chose to study at Tohoku University due to a connection there who was able to organize a research study within their lab group. Through this connection, Jeremy was able to expand his research through advanced ultrasound and imaging technology: “I learned a new technique called EchoDynamography. This requires ultrasound scans of the heart and applies novel algorithms developed within this Japanese research groups to characterize flow vectors within the heart. I completed an investigation involving human participants where I manipulated cardiac preload through body tilting and exercise.”

Jeremy shares his favourite part of the experience and some advice for students looking into international academic experience: “My favourite part was immersing myself in Japanese culture, from the welcoming people to the amazing food and nature I was blown away by the beauty of Japan and Tohoku region. I am very grateful to now have friends and colleagues in a different field of study and continent. I would advise all students to seek out international experiences where possible, the breadth it offers to your professional network and personal experiences is unparalled.”

Graduate Student International Experience award funds are available to University of Waterloo graduate students who participate in:

  • An academic exchange
  • A study term abroad related to research or an academic requirement
  • Work or volunteer experience in another country
