John Lu travelled to Tokyo, Japan to work as a research intern at the National Institute of Informatics (NII). John is a PhD student in Electrical and Computer Engineering studying the integration of logical reasoning and learning-based optimization. With the support of an International Experience Award, John was able to work with a new research group that aligned with his doctoral research.
Being a fan of Japanese culture, John was excited about the chance to go to Tokyo and work at a prestigious institution. "NII is a world-renowned research institute in Computer Science and my host, Prof. Ichrio Hasuo, is a leading researcher in my field."
Researching a new area of his PhD topic gave John new experience and new insight. "During the research internship, I worked on a project that was different from my usual PhD work. It was really exciting to dive into a new area with a new group, and it helped me broaden my perspective and grow as a researcher."
John enjoyed the experience he had at the National Institute of Informatics: "NII hosts many research interns from different countries every year, and it was fun talking to people with diverse backgrounds! I also got to travel around Tokyo, which is such a vibrant city with tons of amazing foods, exciting shows, and beautiful spots to explore."
John recommends an international experience to other graduate students: "It will be a fun and rewarding experience, helping you broaden your research perspective and explore new things in life."
