HeForShe faculty advocates named

The 2018-2019 HeForShe Faculty Advocates have been named. The advocates are:

  • Applied Health Sciences – Corey Johnson;
  • Engineering – Sean Peterson;
  • Environment – Jennifer Dean;
  • Arts – Jay Dolmage;
  • Science – Heidi Swanson;
  • Math - Raouf Boutaba;
  • St. Pauls – Rick Myers;
  • St. Jerome’s - David Seljak;
  • Renison -  Krisitna Llewellyn; and
  • Conrad Grebel - Alicia Batten.

The main role of the faculty advocate is to engage with students, faculty, staff and alumni regarding faculty-specific gender equity issues, work to address problematic areas, and foster a gender-equitable faculty and campus.

The focus is on faculty-specific issues and advocates will engage with their stakeholders to hear what issues emerge and need to be addressed.

Advocates will facilitate initiatives, organize events, provide direction for student groups, and/or provide financial assistance for various initiatives linked to the goals of the HeForShe IMPACT 10x10x10 framework.

Each advocate will serve a one-year term, with an option to continue in the role for another term based on a review.

A message from the Centre for Extended Learning (CEL).

The James D. Leslie Graduate Award will be awarded annually to a full-time or part-time graduate student who has completed their degree requirements in one of Waterloo’s fully online graduate degree programs, achieving a minimum 80 percent overall average and demonstrating the benefits of lifelong learning.

This Award is in recognition of the contributions of James D. Leslie to the foundation of Waterloo’s Distance Education program, now the Centre for Extended Learning. It was made possible by a donation from Professor Leslie’s widow, Dr. Josephine Naidoo, and his children Dr. Christina Leslie, Dr. Ken Leslie, and Dr. Michele Leslie.

Ups and downs for the Hagey Hub elevator

The view of the Hagey Hub's atrium from the working elevator.

This article was originally posted on the Faculty of Arts website.

Coincidence? We think not. No sooner had our dean, Douglas Peers, called out the infamously immobile Hagey Hub elevator in his convocation address than it was up and running the next day.

“I have also been hoping — perhaps unreasonably — that the elevator in the Hagey Hub would be working by the time you graduated. Sadly, the latter hope has not been realized,” he joked. “Please bear in mind that I am a historian, not an engineer, and there is very little I can personally bring to the situation."

Famous last words.

You may recall that the Hagey Hall Hub opened just in time for classes in September 2016, with a lovely set of stairs but not a functioning elevator. In the many months that followed, the fate of the machinery remained a mystery, not to mention a running joke. The elevator was the last piece in making the Hub more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

While the elevator’s troubles appear to be at an end, we suspect there are a few more jibes coming its way. We encourage staff, faculty and students to enjoy a free ride before the inevitable lineups form (or the novelty wears off).

New alumni, don’t worry, you didn’t miss your chance!  It’s never too early to attend your first Reunion – including a tour of Arts buildings. In the meantime, we hope all of the dean’s hopes for you come true as well.

Special thank you to Plant Operations and the elevator experts for making this happen.
