Katherine Bergman stepping down at St. Jerome's

Katherine Bergman.Professor Katherine Bergman has resigned as President and Vice-Chancellor of St. Jerome’s University effective June 30, 2019, according to an official announcement from the federated university.

“Since her arrival in 2012, President Bergman has led SJU through a period of significant transformation. The University completed its campus renewal project, creating a welcoming learning and community environment for students, faculty and staff, as well as a new place of priority for Notre Dame Chapel,” says a notice circulated to the University of Waterloo's Executive Council earlier this month. “The campus renewal project put SJU in the national spotlight, highlighting its use of Integrated Project Delivery and Lean to deliver the project on budget, ahead of time, and with enhancements to the original design.”

“Under President Bergman’s leadership, a new strategic plan has been implemented to advance the vision and mission of SJU. Working collaboratively with faculty, the University has seen increased growth, support, and recognition for faculty-led research projects. President Bergman has also led initiatives in support of student wellness and environmental sustainability.”

“Community building has been a top priority for President Bergman. She has been a significant influence in cultivating relationships with the external University community as she has nurtured strong connections with our alumni, donors, and worshipping community members, and has contributed to building the relationships necessary to lead successful fundraising campaigns in support of campus initiatives.”

An alumnus of the university, Bergman joined St. Jerome’s as its 7th President and Vice-Chancellor from the University of Regina’s Faculty of Science in 2012.

“We are grateful to President Bergman for her dedicated service to St. Jerome’s University, and as she returns home to Saskatchewan to be with her family, we wish her continued success in her future endeavours,” the statement concludes.

Waterloo Centre for German Studies names book prize winner

The winner of the inaugural WCGS Book Prize has been announced. Alice Weinreb of Loyola University is the winner for her book Modern Hungers: Food and Power in Twentieth-Century Germany, published by Oxford University Press.

The cover of "Modern Hungers."Professor Weinreb examines how hunger has been a central motivating force in German politics throughout the 20thcentury. By focusing on hunger’s role in German society, Weinreb demonstrates “the fluid relationship between state power and food provisioning.” If governments control the food supply, they can also control the populaces they govern, and Weinreb uses Germany as a case study to illustrate this important point.

Professor Weinreb’s book was selected from a shortlist representing the excellent work being done in German studies today, to read more about the Professor Weinreb’s book and the shortlist check out the website

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2018 WCGS Book Prize (for books published in 2018). For eligibility criteria and details on how to apply, please visit the WCGS website.
