East Campus entrance to close for transit plaza construction

A campus map outlining the closed entrance on Phillip Street, and the two accessible entrances on Phillip and Columbia.

Construction on the Grand River Transit Plaza on the University's east campus is going into overdrive next week.

The East Campus entrance at 295 Phillip Street will be temporarily closed on Tuesday, August 6 as modifications are carried out to the roadway and a new entrance to the transit hub is built.

The University's East Campus buildings will still be accessible from entrances on Columbia Street and at 305 Phillip Street. The entrance to parking lot B, also off Phillip Street, will not be impeded.

The construction closure should last approximately one week.

Grand River Transit has more information about the transit plaza currently under construction on East Campus. When it is up and running, the plaza will include a bus-only roadway and bus stops between Phillip Street and Ring Road, facilitating connections between buses and the University of Waterloo ION station.

What's open and closed on the long weekend

August has scarcely begun and here we are talking about long weekend closures already. I haven't even processed the fact that July has come to an end, but here we are.

Monday, August 5 is a Civic Holiday, a statutory holiday that falls annually on the first Monday in August. It is known by many names across the province, including Simcoe Day, named for Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada John Graves Simcoe, but also John Galt Day in Guelph, George Hamilton Day in (you guessed it) Hamilton, Joseph Brant Day in Burlington, Founders' Day in Brantford, and just plain Civic Holiday in most other places.

That's a roundabout way of saying that the University will be closed for the most part while the community enjoys a long weekend. Some highlights:

All Print + Retail Solutions locations will be closed.

All UW Food Services units are closed Monday unless otherwise specified on their website. Exceptions include The Market at UWP in Claudette Millar Hall, which is open Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

The Physical Activities Complex and Columbia Icefield will be closed on Sunday, August 4 and Monday, August 5.

With the exam period in full swing, Library facilities will be open over the long weekend, with the Davis Centre  open 24 hours on Monday, while the Dana Porter Library will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Hours for all branches can be found on the Library's website.

As always, the Student Life Centre's Turnkey Desk remains open 24 hours a day, and UW Police are available at extension 22222 or 519-888-4911 off-campus.

Have a wonderful long weekend!

Switchboard Operator prepares to hang up after 30 years and other notes

“Please join me in congratulating Rhonda Lantz on her upcoming retirement from her position as the Switchboard Call Operator for the University of Waterloo main phone number,” writes Liz Doede of Information Systems and Technology (IST). “We will miss Rhonda as she has been a valuable asset and an endless source of campus information for students, parents, vendors, faculty, staff and the general community of callers.”

Lantz originally trained on a “cord board” when she was a 911 Operator with Waterloo Regional Police Services. She stayed with the Police until she was hired at University of Waterloo as a casual employee in January 1989. She was hired as 1 of 5 full-time operators who worked from the second floor of the Physics building.

Lantz worked as the University’s Night Operator for a brief time, with hours from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. In January 2003, she became a permanent staff member and worked in the Admin Office with Ginny Polai as her supervisor. After two years in administration, she decided to return to the telephone switchboard as an Operator and has been dedicated to her job ever since.

“Rhonda will now have more time to enjoy gardening, her 2 sons, Adam and Travis, 2 grandchildren, Charlotte (4) and Bennett (6 months) as well as hunting and fishing trips with husband, Doug,” writes Doede. “On behalf of everyone in IST and many across campus, I would like to thank Rhonda for her hard work and dedication over the years and wish her good health, a colourful future ahead and a well-earned retirement.”

At Rhonda’s request, her send-off will be a farewell lunch with a group of her immediate co-workers.

Renison Night Market poster.Renison University College is inviting members of the University community to experience art, music and food at their Night Market event on Friday, August 9 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in the Renison Upper Parking Lot. "With a variety of vendors, there will be lots of sights and sounds to enjoy while you savour cuisine from around the world," says a note from Renison. "Join us for a family-friendly evening to help celebrate Renison’s 60th anniversary."

What a twist: The Lime e-scooter pilot on the University of Waterloo campus will be ending on August 12 at 11:59 p.m. This brings the pilot project on both the University campus and in the Waterloo community to a close. Lime will be looking ahead to 2020 when they hope the provincial government updates legislation that would allow a formal rollout of e-scooters on public roads.

UW Food Services is looking for customer service-oriented individuals to work in a variety of casual part time roles all over campus. Submit your resume online. In addition, Food Services will be hosting a Recruitment Fair on Monday, August 12 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Federation Hall.
