The Copyright Advisory Committee has issued some guidance to faculty members and instructors about copyright issues in light of the transition of courses online.

"The same rules that were in place before are in place now," writes Lauren Byl, copyright & licensing librarian, on behalf of the Copyright Advisory Committee in a memo circulated to campus Monday. "There have been no changes to the assessment of copyright-protected materials."

This means:

  • Linking to Library licensed resources (eBook and eJournal content) is always okay, with the exception of the Harvard Business Review.
  • Linking to legal, freely available material online is always okay.

"If you want to provide content directly in LEARN, remember:

  • The Fair Dealing Advisory prvides guidelines on how much may be scanned and uploaded to LEARN.
  • eJournals and eBooks are almost always covered by license agreements. License agreements set out specific rules to follow when using electronic resources. To find out if you can use licensed content in LEARN, use the Finding Usage Rights page for step-by-step instructions on how to find license terms. Alternatively, you can email copyright@uwaterloo.ca for an answer.
  • When posting material online, remember that the Advisory and Library licenses guidelines are based on providing materials to students in a way where access is restricted (ex. password protected) to only the instructor and students in the class.

Resources and services available:

"Navigate to https://uwaterloo.webex.com/meet/lrbyl," Byl writes. "You can join by phone by calling 1-844-426-4405 and entering access code 736 452 462."

"Thanks for your attention to this as you transition your courses online. Please don’t hesitate to reach out for help as questions arise."

Here's the latest Nutrition Month update from Health Services Dietitian Sandra Ace:

Today is Dietitians Day, and Registered Dietitians across Canada are actively highlighting the unique role they play in supporting health living for all Canadians by translating the science of nutrition into actions that everyone can understand. Dietitians are science-trained professionals who have counselling skills to provide individually tailored and practical advice to help consumers. In keeping with the Myth vs Fact theme of my other posts, I am going to challenge a few myths about dietitians.

Myth #1: Dietitians are the food police. On the contrary, we don’t believe that food is inherently “good” or “bad.” Labelling foods this way leads to abnormal preoccupation with “clean” foods that often results in guilt, dieting, stress eating and disordered eating. Even foods that have a less than ideal nutritional profile can be enjoyed as part of a healthy, balanced eating pattern.

Myth #2: Dietitians are judgmental. While a dietitian will evaluate your eating habits, we never judge you for information you share with us.

Myth #3: Dietitians just eat salad. This couldn’t be farther from the truth! Dietitians enjoy a wide variety of foods, including salads, but we also enjoy deserts, chocolates and other treats.

If you are looking for food and nutrition information you can trust, UnlockFood.ca is an award winning website with “expert guidance on everyday eating” brought to you by Dietitians of Canada. You’ll find tips, recipes, videos and interactive tools on a wide array of topics, can learn more about Nutrition Month 2020 or can find a registered dietitian. Many extended health insurance programs, including the plan which covers eligible University of Waterloo employees, provide benefits for paramedical services including counselling by Registered Dietitians. You can also talk to a Registered Dietitian for general healthy eating guidance by calling Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000.
