Waterloo remembers

"“No words can add to their fame, nor so long as gratitude holds a place in men’s hearts can our forgetfulness be suffered to detract from their renown. For as the war dwarfed by its magnitude all contests of the past, so the wonder of human resource, the splendor of human heroism, reached a height never witnessed before."

On Saturday, November 11, the Waterloo community, along with the rest of the country, will pause to remember Canada's war dead.

The official date of the Remembrance Day commemoration is always November 11, the anniversary of the day in 1918 when the guns fell silent at the end of the First World War.

"As we mark Remembrance Day this year, we are reminded that the shadow of violent conflict is not confined to the pages of history books; it is a present and pressing reality. November 11 is our opportunity to honour the sacrifices of those who have put themselves in harm’s way to preserve our freedoms," says President and Vice-Chancellor Vivek Goel. "The consequences of these wars ripple across communities, time and distance, affecting us all in profound ways."

Read President Goel's full statement on his website.

Though Remembrance Day falls on Saturday this year, it will be recognized on campus today at a ceremony in the Student Life Centre beginning at 10:45 a.m. hosted by the Faculty of Health's Myeengun Henry. Henry will provide welcoming remarks, followed by a recorded recitation of the famous John McCrae poem In Flanders Fields, by Indigenous veteran Arnold Albert. Students will lower flags and the Eagle Staff at 10:58 a.m. as the Last Post is played. There will be two minutes of silence at 11:00 a.m., followed by the playing of Reveille as the flags and Eagle Staff are raised again. A video featuring veterans will follow. The ceremony will close at 11:15 a.m.

In accordance with the University's flag-lowering guidelines, flags across the University of Waterloo will be at half-mast on Saturday, November 11 to mark Remembrance Day.

Remembrance Day ceremonies are planned across the region on Saturday:

In Waterloo, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 530 parade will begin at 10:20 a.m. and make its way to the Waterloo Cenotaph behind City Hall for the 10:30 a.m. ceremony. A moment of silence will be observed at 11:00 a.m. The City of Waterloo will be livestreaming the ceremony on its Facebook page.

In Kitchener, the Royal Canadian Legion Fred Gies Branch 50 parade will start at 10:30 a.m. on Ontario Street and head down King and Frederick to the Duke Street Cenotaph.

In Cambridge, the Galt Legion parade starts will start on Veterans Way at 9:45 a.m. and will travel down Water Street to the Main Street Bridge and then to the cenotaph at Queens Square at 11:00 a.m. Similar ceremonies will be held in Preston and Hespeler.

In Stratford, there will be a ceremony at the Stratford Cenotaph at 11:00 a.m.

Check local media websites for more details about the ceremonies.

Diwali is a religious festival celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains worldwide, a five-day festival of lights observed in October or November each year. Locally, Diwali is among the holidays that Waterloo's city council has included in its fireworks bylaw, alongside Canada Day, Victoria Day, and the Lunar New Year. A cartoon stick person slips on an icy patch on the sidewalk.Stay a step ahead of slips, trips and falls this winter: "As temperatures drop and snow and ice move in, the risk of serious injury due to slips, trips and falls increases," says a message from the Safety Office. "Each year the Safety Office receives a large number of incident reports for outdoor slips, trips and falls that occur at the same elevation and involve snow or ice. Many of these incidents are related to inappropriate footwear, inattention to weather conditions and not using maintained pathways."

"Please plan and ensure you have proper footwear and enough time to reach your destination safely based on the weather and surface conditions. Always use maintained roads and pathways and if you encounter unsafe walking conditions, immediately report them to Plant Operations by calling ext. 43793 (24 hours a day). The green/yellow salt or sand bins that are placed throughout campus during the winter months can be also used to aid with traction on slippery areas."

"Indoor workplaces must also be kept free of slip, trip and fall hazards. Ensure good housekeeping practices are adhered to, inspect your work area and notify your supervisor about any hazards. See the Slips Trips and Falls program for more information and please ensure the Get a Grip Don’t Slip and Fall poster is posted in your work area."
