A message from Community Relations and Events.
The University of Waterloo has finalized its values: to think differently, act with purpose, and work together. Convocation presents an excellent opportunity for all of us to demonstrate how we can come together to make a positive impact on the newest graduates in our Waterloo community.
Join the growing community of convocation ambassadors who will help bring this celebration to life!
Five ceremonies will take place on October 25 and 26, and we need over 80 ambassadors to make it a success.
Staff are encouraged to get involved, and managers are urged to promote this opportunity to their teams. There are many different roles and shifts available, offering new professional development opportunities and the chance to connect with colleagues across campus.
Training and meals will be provided.
Visit the convocation website to learn more about the roles and sign up!
A message from the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office (SVPRO).
Today begins Consent Week on our UWaterloo campus, however, we have been in the Red Zone since Orientation Week. The Red Zone is the time between Orientation and Halloween when students, especially first year students, are more likely to experience sexual violence.
This occurs because consent is not fully understood, practiced or modelled and we live in a society where sexual violence is normalized, minimized and perpetuated in the media and popular culture. Students feel pressure to fit in, meet new people and possibly try new things such as parties, alcohol and drugs. New students have limited knowledge of supports and resources and may have yet to make friends and social connections.
This fall SVPRO, the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office and WUSA, the Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association will be bringing awareness to the Red Zone and working to prevent it with consent education and a campaign entitled Reclaiming the Red Zone.
Events will be taking place this week from September 16 to 20 and will continue into the fall as building consent culture is continuous and something we can all contribute to.
You can check out everything happening at UW here!
SVPRO supports all students, staff, and faculty on the UWaterloo campus who have experienced or been impacted by sexual violence. For resources, including SVPRO’s infographics and information about talking to children about consent, visit the SVPRO website. Please feel free to print and hang our infographics.
If you would like physical resources about SVPRO and the Red Zone please contact Stacey Jacobs s3jacobs@uwaterloo.ca.
A message from the Teaching Innovation Incubator and the Accessible Education Project Team.
Ontario’s post-secondary institutions are at the forefront of creating a more inclusive and accessible educational landscape, thanks to the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and the review completed by the Post-Secondary Education Standards Development Committee (PSE).
On the tails of the PSE report and recommendations, the University of Waterloo renewed its commitment to ensuring our campus is inclusive and accessible to our community of learners through the Provost’s Disability Inclusion Steering Committee and the Teaching Innovation Incubator’s Accessible Education Project. The work occurring across these project teams is iterative and collaborative, recognizing that a one-size-fits-all approach to this work will be insufficient in addressing the wide-ranging needs of our students and faculty members.
Waterloo faculty and staff are invited to register to attend a campus event focused on learning about and discussing the changes to accessible education at the University of Waterloo. Accessible Education Day will be held over two half-days during the fall reading week: October 16 and October 17 in a hybrid format. In-person and online panel discussions and workshop sessions will be designed to appeal to educators with a range of knowledge and experience with this kind of work. Recordings of sessions will also be made available following the event.
This interactive, community-focused event focused on fostering dialogue will spotlight efforts taking place across our campus to ensure accessibility and disability inclusion are at the forefront of academics at Waterloo, with input from the Accessible Education Project Team, instructors, students with lived disability experience, and others involved in this work.
The overall purpose of Accessible Education Day is to offer the teaching community an opportunity to share what they know, ask questions, and learn more about the supports available to you.
Accessible Education Day will include a keynote address provided by disability scholar and advocate, Dr. Jay Dolmage, a series of panel discussions and workshops, and a final session designed to evoke productive discussion.
Please visit the Accessible Education Day website for more information or to register.
A message from the Office of Advancement.
Student awards opened doors for environmental engineering student Frances Hallen to pursue extracurricular, research and co-op opportunities. She’s using everything she’s learned to advance sustainable energy development.
Read Frances’s story in the 2023-24 Report on Giving.
A message from the P3 Community of Practice.
The P3 Community of Practice is hosting the 5th annual Showcase event on campus on Wednesday, September 25, between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. at the Davis Centre Room 1302.
This event is a great opportunity to learn more about how different departments are using continuous improvement, change management, and project tools and methodologies to achieve desired outcomes.
The Showcase is a free, in-person event that brings campus colleagues together to share best practices, successes, and connect. It will feature poster exhibits and poster flash talks, all centered around ideas and practices that contribute to continuous improvement, change management, and project management.
The Showcase is open to all employees and students, and everyone is invited to drop by and explore the various booths and poster presentations.
For more information, please visit the Showcase event website, or email p3commun@uwaterloo.ca.

"Join the University of Waterloo and the Waterloo Climate Institute for a conversation on how we find trusted information on climate action in a sea of misinformation," says the lecture's background blurb. "We’ll discuss ways to overcome the confusing and overwhelming options for climate action and build trust in climate science so that we can build resilient communities and live better together."
Speakers include Fatima Syed of The Narwhal, Dr. Sarah Burch, Dr. Juan Moreno-Cruz, and Janna Wale.
"Happy National Postdoc Appreciation Week (NPAW)!" says a note from Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs (GSPA). "Originally started by the National Postdoctoral Association, NPAW takes place each year in September to recognize the significant contributions that postdoctoral scholars make to research and discovery. Universities across North America celebrate NPAW, and Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs (GSPA) is pleased to have been hosting NPAW activities for our postdocs since 2016. Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs is pleased to invite all postdocs to join in on the events and opportunities this week as we celebrate NPAW for the ninth year."
"Opportunities include networking, yoga, a nature walk, and more! If you are a postdoc who has not registered for these events, consider doing so now through the schedule of events on our website. If you are faculty, staff, or another member of the University of Waterloo community, we encourage you to share these opportunities within your unit and keep an eye on the Daily Bulletin this week as we share interesting and important information about postdocs each day."

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg, and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is co-ordinated within the Office of Indigenous Relations.
