SEE Canada Grant: your ticket to professional development

A map of Canada with dotted lines connecting destinations across the country.

A message from Human Resources.

We are excited to announce the launch of the 2025/26 Staff Enhancement Experience (SEE) Canada Grant this spring. The grant, aimed at supporting and investing in the professional development of our regular, full-time staff members, offers a unique opportunity by supporting national travel for staff to engage in idea exchange and learning experiences with counterparts from various Canadian universities, colleges, research institutions, or industry partners.

The main objective of the SEE Canada Grant is to enable staff to broaden their knowledge base and return with fresh insights to apply to their roles at Waterloo and share with their teams. The SEE Canada Selection Committee will evaluate proposals from eligible staff members interested in travelling to one or more Canadian organizations for a period of up to two weeks. Each year, up to five proposals will be selected for funding.

A virtual brown-bag lunch and learn is scheduled for Thursday, April 24 at noon. Join us to learn more about this free innovative learning experience for regular, full-time staff members and consider applying for this amazing career opportunity. Register today! Detailed application information and forms are available on the SEE Canada Grant webpage. Proposals must be submitted by May 31.

For any inquiries regarding the grant, please contact d.baker@uwaterloo.ca.

Transition to a smoke-free campus continues as designated smoking areas are phased out

A message from Jacinda Reitsma, Vice-President, Administration and Finance.

Starting May 1, 2025, the University of Waterloo will remove all designated smoking areas (DSAs) as the final phase of its transition to a smoke-free campus. This ban includes all forms of smoking, such as tobacco, cannabis, and other products that produce smoke or vapour. Exceptions are made for Indigenous ceremonies or traditions and to individuals with medical accommodations.

The University will focus on education and support for those wishing to stop smoking. Visit theSmoke-Free Waterloo website for more information and resources.

Thank you for your cooperation in creating a healthier campus environment.

Dig this: Digital Feminist Network hosts summit

A message from the Digital Feminist Network (DigFemNet).

The Digital Feminist Network (DigFemNet) is hosting its first-ever Summit at the University of Waterloo from April 14 to 16, and you’re invited to be part of it.

The summit features several public sessions, including the Early Career Scholar Show & Shares, a Keynote by Dr. Radhika Gajjala from Bowling Green State University, and workshops that range from silkscreening protest media to making zines to learning about data collection and management.

The Digital Feminist Network (DigFemNet) is a recently established initiative that brings together feminist and queer scholars from across Canada to confront some of the most pressing challenges in our digital world—online hate, digital inequity, and technology-facilitated gender-based violence.

Co-directed by Dr. Brianna Wiens (English Language & Literature) and Dr. Shana MacDonald (Communication Arts), DigFemNet brings together researchers from five partner institutions: Waterloo, McMaster University, the University of Ottawa, York University, and the University of Guelph. Together, we’re working to better understand how misogynist hate operates—both online and offline—and to build inventive, community-driven ways to resist it.

If you're passionate about feminist research, digital justice, and collective action, check out the full DigFemNet Summit 2025 program and join us. Register now.

Yugofuturisms conference featuring a red star on a concrete wall.

The Departments of Fine Arts and Germanic and Slavic Studies have collaborated to host a four-day series  dedicated to exploring Yugoslavia's legacy and future. The Yugofuturisms conference is organized as part of the recently established New Yugoslav Studies Association - Toronto Chapter.

Organizers include Dr. Bojana Videkanic (Fine Arts, Waterloo), Dr, Dragana Obradovic (Slavic Studies, University of Toronto) and Dr. Zdenko Mandusic (Slavic Studies, University of Toronto).

"Taking its name of Afrofuturism—a term Black diasporic scholars coined for the liberatory space they created through visual art, technoculture, and speculative fiction—the Yugofuturisms conference seeks to provide a space for creative collaborative engagements with the legacies of emancipation at the core of the Yugoslav project. It imagines Yugoslavia anew in a process that welcomes diasporic communities in the cultural and intellectual life of the region."

The conference will take place from April 10 to April 13 at the University of Waterloo at East Campus Hall Room 1205. "Those who cannot join us in-person will be able to follow most of the panels via Zoom," says a note from organizers. "Apart from eleven panels and roundtables, the conference will feature a film screening program, a live art performance, and a concert with local bands."

You can register for the conference on Eventbrite. Registrants will receive a Zoom link for each day of the conference. The event is free and open to public to academic and non-academic participants alike.

This event is supported by a SSHRC Connection Grant and co-sponsored by Departments of Fine Arts and Germanic and Slavic Studies.

If you have any questions regarding registration or require additional information about the conference, please contact Dr. Videkanic at bojana.videkanic@uwaterloo.ca.
