National AccessAbility Week and marking a year of impact with the Disability Affinity Program

Disability Affinity Program

A message from the Office of the Associate Provost, Campus Support and Accessibility.

National AccessAbility Week (NAAW) is a celebration led by the Government of Canada that occurs from May 30th to June 6th, 2026. NAAW is a time to recognize the contributions of Canadians with disabilities and to raise awareness about the importance of accessibility and inclusion in our communities.

Every year, the Office of the Associate Provost, Campus Support and Accessibility and the Campus Accessibility team observes NAAW by celebrating a different University initiative each day that demonstrates a commitment to advancing accessibility and disability inclusion. Today, we are featuring the Disability Affinity Program.

The Disability Affinity Program is a space for University of Waterloo students, staff, and faculty to seek peer support, community, and collaboration. The program comprises the Student Disability Community Network, the Employee Disability Community Network, and the Accessibility Ally Network.

Since its launch in January 2025, the Disability Affinity Program has been met with enthusiasm and support from University of Waterloo community members. As members of the Student and Employee Disability Community Networks described, the program “build[s] community and belonging for disabled students and staff”, is “making a difference to a lot of people”, and "it's given a platform and attention…it really feels like there is a place to go when you're struggling and a network that will support you.” Members of the Accessibility Ally Network offered feedback naming the informative information sharing and meaningful networking with campus projects they were not previously aware of.

The program further supports institutional mandates under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act by supporting community engagement pathways. In 2025, the Disability Affinity Program supported or promoted 14 community engagement opportunities, including consultation on the Sustainable Transportation Plan and Library Strategic Space Plan.

You can participate in the Disability Affinity Program by joining the Student or Employee Disability Community Network email list or the Accessibility Ally Network Microsoft Team. Questions about the Disability Affinity Program can be directed to aoda@uwaterloo.ca or 519-888-4567 x43428.

Harnessing AI to make learning more accessible

Waterloo’s new Future of Work Institute is encouraging students, professors and industry leaders to collaborate in reimagining education and career development for an AI-driven world.

The Institute’s first initiative is Futures Lab: An AI + UX Prototyping Workshop, which invites students to learn AI-related skills and build teams to tackle educational problems leveraging Google’s suite of AI tools such as Gemini Canvas and Google AI Studio.

The initiative is part of a recent research collaboration announced between the University of Waterloo and Google to examine the impact of AI on education and career readiness. It’s one of more than 1,160 research partnerships that connects University researchers and students with industry, government and non-profit organizations to effectively address challenges facing the economy and society.

In December 2025, the first of these recurring workshops concluded with the “Google-UWaterloo Symposium on the Future of Learning,” where student teams could showcase their projects for the public.

Their innovative work, however, is just getting started. Three interdisciplinary teams of Waterloo students are harnessing this powerful technology to build a better future.
