Beginning my next chapter at Waterloo

A message from Bill Rosehart, President and Vice-Chancellor.
As I begin my term as President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Waterloo, I want to share that this is an extraordinary honour and a deeply meaningful homecoming.
Waterloo has shaped much of who I am. I first arrived as a student and experienced the power of co-op as an undergraduate, felt the energy of Waterloo’s research environment as a graduate student, and discovered the joy of teaching here as a sessional instructor. Those experiences influenced how I think, how I learn, and how I lead.
I return with deep respect for what this remarkable community has built. Waterloo was founded on a bold idea: that academic excellence, research, entrepreneurship, and real-world experience could come together to change lives and strengthen society. That idea continues to define and distinguish Waterloo today. It also reminds us that our greatest contributions have come when we have thought differently and worked together with shared purpose.
My first priority is to listen and learn. Since March, I have had more than 100 initial meetings across this vibrant community. In every conversation, I have been struck by Waterloo’s greatest strength – it’s people. Our students, faculty, and staff are innovative, dedicated, and deeply committed to making a difference. Together, you have built a University that is not only a national leader, but a global force in research, learning, and entrepreneurship.

Tri-Agency seeks feedback on proposed Research Data Management policy implementation

A message from the Research Data Management Working Group, the Office of Research and the Libraries.
Canada’s federal research funding agencies (CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC) are inviting feedback on proposed clarifications and an implementation approach for the data deposit requirement of the Tri-Agency Research Data Management (RDM) Policy. The proposed approach includes clarifications related to data retention, data deposit, and data availability, and is intended to support the implementation of requirements for agency-funded research data and associated documentation.
Researchers, trainees, research administrators, and others involved in the research lifecycle are encouraged to review the proposed clarifications and FAQs and share feedback on how the requirements may affect research practices within their disciplines and institutions. Feedback submitted through the online consultation will help inform the final requirements and implementation approach.
The consultation period is open until July 17, 2026. Learn more and provide feedback through the Tri-Agency consultation page and feedback form.
Discontinuation of PebblePad
A message from the Office of Associate Vice-President, Academic.
PebblePad has been the University's ePortfolio solution since 2018. After assessing information collected through a review of current and potential future use cases, cost/benefit analysis and market research, a decision has been made to begin a planned sunsetting and discontinuation of the platform.
The University is committed to creating an exceptional learning experience for students. This aligns with the Digital Learning Strategy, in which the available educational technologies (EdTech) are streamlined to avoid duplication while pedagogical needs are supported. The University’s current EdTech ecosystem is complex, and costs are increasing unsustainably. In the current financial climate, funding for currently supported teaching and learning technologies, and those newly requested, will be limited. This will necessitate careful EdTech decisions over the next few years, with a focus on investments that deliver the most value towards a positive student experience.
PebblePad will remain fully functional during the transition period, ending July 31, 2027.As courses move to alternative tools over the next year, you may notice changes in how course activities and materials are accessed. If you have content stored in the PebblePad platform from current or past courses, you will be asked to transfer or save it elsewhere before the platform is retired on July 31, 2027.
During the transition period, there will be a thorough needs assessment in consultation with current and prospective users to determine what solution(s) are appropriate. For questions and support, please direct your inquiries to LEARNhelp@uwaterloo.ca.
