This Summer Barry Warner, Chair of the Earth sciences department, went on a journey of epic proportions across Canada to find rocks suitable for the Peter Russell Rock Garden.
Continuing his travels across Canada, Barry Warner's second stop was at Nipple Mountain in British Columbia, near Kelowna. With the help of rock enthusiast and prospector, Don Sandberg, Warner was once again able to find some incredible specimens for the Peter Russell Rock Garden.
The Atlantic Geoscience Society offered to round up rocks from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick for the Rock Garden. They are having a contest for members to suggest a suitable rock to represent their provinces. The winning rocks will be shipped to Waterloo.
A new feature for the museum is here! A cast of Mistaken Point, a fossil site in Newfoundland, is now located in the atrium!

You might have heard news of a recent discovery of mummified camel leg bone fragments of the genus Paracamelus on Ellesmere Island in Northern Canada. Here at the museum, we have a camel foot!

It's official: our replica mine tunnel is now complete and ready to be explored! Our grand opening was a success as many donors, alumni and others came out to witness the official unveiling of the donor recognition and mine tunnel plaques signaling the finish of our mine tunnel project.
Wayne DeBrusk of Shuniah Township, near Thunder Bay, has donated a wonderful example of stromatolitic limestone to the Earth Sciences museum. Originally from the Eaglehead Lake area north of Thunder Bay, this boulder was found in a gravel pit. "Strom," as Wayne calls it, is now installed in our rock garden.
