Every year, the Renison English Language Institute is pleased to hire student staff in the role as a Peer Leader to support English language learner students in our programs.

What jobs are available?

For the Spring 2022 term, we are recruiting:

  • 1 English For Academic Success (EFAS) Peer Leader
  • 2 English For Success (EFS) Peer Leaders
  • 2 Intensive Bridge to Academic Success in English (iBASE) Peer Leaders
  • 4 Intensive English For Academic Success (iEFAS) Peer Leaders

For the Fall 2022 term, we are recruiting:

  • 4 Bridge to Academic Success in English (BASE) Peer Leaders
    • This role will also support our GEAR program
  • 1 English For Academic Success (EFAS) Peer Leader

Note: All positions are dependent on program enrolment with English language learners who register for our programs. While we are optimistics we will reach enrolment targets for our respective programs, we reserve the right to cancel any positions prior to their start date. 

What qualities do I need to be a Peer Leader?

As a Peer Leader we need you to:

  • Exhibit strong peer mentorship skills: you must have an eagerness to want to mentor and support new international students coming to Canada.
  • Be outgoing: you won’t be expected to lead cheers, but we need you to feel comfortable facilitating both in-person and virtual events. During this, you will demonstrate a warm, welcoming attitude for every student. You will need to feel comfortable communicating with students via text messaging groups to invite them to participate in events or engage in small talk conversations.
  • Know international students: you must have a desire and passion for helping new international students and English Language Learners, and have a working knowledge of the needs of this group of students.
  • Be a positive role model: we need you to possess the skills needed to be a successful student, both personally and academically. You must exhibit awareness and knowledge of strategies for academic and personal success as a student.
  • Have strong knowledge of the university campus: this position is ideal for senior undergraduate students with a strong knowledge of campus services and resources, student leadership experience, and a good understanding of the first-year international student experience.
  • Be legally able to work in Canada:you must have a Social Insurance Number to fulfill the position.
  • Have access to a strong Internet connection and a data plan:the successful candidates must be able to legally work in Canada, and must have access to a strong Internet connection and a data plan, with access to a computer/microphone/camera to host virtual events. You will also need a phone to access apps such as WhatsApp, WeChat, KakaoTalk to communicate via text messaging groups with students.

Preference will be given to students with international or cross-cultural experience, and/or additional language competencies. The positions are ideal for senior undergraduate students with a strong knowledge of campus services and resources, student leadership experience, and a good understanding of the first-year international student experience.

These positions are happening both in-person at Renison and virtually.
