Equity Related Resources
Equity at the University of Waterloo is a vital foundation for transforming academic spaces into vibrant communities where diverse voices inspire innovation, deepen understanding, and drive meaningful change. Through a commitment to equity, the university fosters a culture of community and belonging that supports transformative learning, collaborative inquiry, and dialogue across disciplines.
Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Anti-Racism (EDI-R)
The Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Anti-Racism (EDI-R) is committed to creating an inclusive, equitable, and just community for everyone. At its core, the office aims to address the systemic barriers that have historically affected marginalized individuals and groups, and it works tirelessly to break down those barriers to create a welcoming and supportive environment for all members of the university.
EDI-R is made up of several interconnected units that each focus on a different aspect of this vital work. The Anti-Racism & Equity Unit addresses and responds to disclosures of racism and harm, as well as promoting equity by ensuring that the experiences and voices of racialized communities are heard, respected, and valued. The Education & Outreach Unit engages students, faculty, and staff through workshops, training, and community-building events that foster a deeper understanding of inclusion and encourage positive, lasting change. Finally, the Policy & Programs Unit works to ensure that the policies, programs, and procedures within the university are inclusive, reflective of diverse needs, and actively promote equity.
The office also provides critical support through various initiatives and tailored resources to ensure that anyone facing discrimination or identity-based harm has access to a network of support. Whether it’s through confidential consultations, educational workshops, or ongoing advocacy for change, EDI-R is there to guide individuals and the broader university community toward a more just and compassionate future. The ultimate goal is to create a campus where every individual feels a sense of belonging, safety, and respect—celebrating their unique identities, experiences, and contributions.

The Equity Committee of FAUW
The Equity Committee is a standing committee within the Faculty Association of the University of Waterloo (FAUW) that addresses equity issues, including those identified in Ontario’s Human Rights Code, through advocacy, education, and collaboration with campus and external partners such as OCUFA and CAUT. Advising the FAUW Board of Directors on equity matters affecting faculty, particularly those impacting equity-deserving groups, the committee names inequities and calls for action to promote fairness and inclusion. It also presents an annual Equity and Inclusivity Award to recognize outstanding contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusivity at the University. With representatives from all six faculties and strong ties to other equity-focused campus units, the committee invites FAUW members to connect, share concerns or ideas, and engage in conversations—whether one-on-one or in groups—about ongoing initiatives and equity advocacy.
