The University of Waterloo Fire Safety-Scholarships

Jensen Hughes and GHL Consultants are committed to providing the highest level of service to the design community. Their goal is to assist designers and other stakeholders in the development of innovative designs which will achieve a level of fire, life safety and security that meets, or exceeds, the expectations of our society as mandated by the current building and fire codes.

Jensen Hughes  Graduate Fire Safety Award

A scholarship valued at $4,000 will be awarded annually to a graduate student enrolled in the MEng, MASc or PhD programs in Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering (Fire Safety) in the Faculty of Engineering.

Criteria and eligibility

  • Graduate student registered in the MEng program pursuing a graduate diploma in Fire Safety, or registered in an MASc or PhD program in the Faculty of Engineering, taking Fire Safety courses and completing research in an area related to Fire Safety
  • Selection to be based on demonstrated academic excellence (minimum 80% cumulative average) and interest/involvement in the area of Fire Safety
  • Preference will be given to those students not already employed in the Fire Safety industry
  • Interested students should submit an application to the Fire Safety Program Coordinator, by September 30
  • Applications will be reviewed and selected by the Program Coordinator

GHL Consultants 4th Year Fire Safety Award

A scholarship valued at $2,500 will be awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in the 4th year undergraduate Fire Safety Engineering course in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering.  

Criteria and eligibility

  • Full-time undergraduate student 
  • Must be enrolled in the 4th year undergraduate Fire Safety Engineering course (ME 567)
  • Selection to be based on scholastic excellence (minimum 80% cumulative average) combined with demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in the area of fire engineering which may include prior work or volunteer experiences
  • Application is required by February 1st through UWaterloo Student Awards and Financial Aid website
  • UW will select recipients after the course drop deadline date in the winter term
