There are extensive computing facilities available to fire researchers through facilities on the University of Waterloo campus and at the Live Fire Research Facility. Data analysis and fire modeling capability are available on PC and UNIX based computer systems. Basic computer modeling of fires can be run using NIST's CFAST zone models or Fire Dynamics Simulator, currently running in parallel on 3 Xeon 3.0 GHz processors. More advanced modeling efforts use commercial CFD codes, customized to run and assess components tailored to fire physics, including new grid generation, combustion, and flow submodels and algorithms.
