Registration opens for the 3MT competition!

The 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) is a university-wide competition for research-based masters thesis and doctoral students at the University of Waterloo.  
Competitors have 1 static slide and 3 minutes to explain the breadth and significance of their research to a non-specialist audience.

3MT at University of Waterloo

  • The competition will begin with 3MT faculty-based heats​ (mid-February to early March, 2014); students will be assessed by non-specialist judges. 
  • Winners will be selected from each faculty to compete in the university-wide 3MT finals, which will be hosted on March 27, 2014.
    • the number of final spaces available per faculty will be calculated based on the ratio of students participating (i.e. if 150 students participate from Faculty of Arts and 35 students participate from Faculty Environment, Faculty Arts will be assigned a larger quota of students to put forth into the semi-final competition).
  • First prize: winner will be awarded $1000 and will advance to the provincial finals to be held at McMaster University on April 24, 2014
  • Runner up: winner will be awarded $500
  • People's choice: will be awarded a prize.  

The winners of the provincial competition will advance to the Canadian national 3MT competition, to be held at University of Manitoba, Winnipeg.  The date of the national competition will be announced in the coming weeks.
