Dr. Li joined the Department of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Waterloo in 2007. Since then, he has established an international reputation for his research in urban remote sensing and geospatial data science. Over the past 16 years, Dr. Li has achieved an extensive record as a scholar and graduate supervisor. His record of graduate supervision includes advising 11 PhD students and 43 master’s students to completion, while sitting as a committee member for many more, both at the University of Waterloo and at other institutions. He has also been active in the supervision of postdoctoral fellows, with 5 completed so far at this University.
Dr. Li’s students have enthusiastically supported his nomination, reporting that he is an impressive role model who inspires them to high levels of achievement. Through his excellent research experience, extensive network, and financial support, Dr. Li provides his students with valuable opportunities for success. Graduate students under Dr. Li’s supervision have a very strong record of publication in top-tier international journals and attendance at prestigious conferences. His students have won awards for their thesis work from the Canadian Remote Sensing Society. Most of his PhD graduates have gone on to impactful careers at universities and research institutions around the world. Dr. Li is a kind and compassionate advisor who is active as a mentor and networker, while being patient and generous with his time.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is co-ordinated within the Office of Indigenous Relations.
