Monday, November 2, 2020 (all day) to Friday, November 6, 2020 (all day)

2020 will be the first year the University of Waterloo officially participates in Treaties Recognition Week (November 2-6).  To contribute to the broader goals of education, reflection, and action, the Indigenous Initiatives Office is excited to host a series of virtual events and videos throughout this important week.

Treaties Recognition Week helps students, faculty, staff, and the public learn about treaties from diverse Indigenous perspectives and encourages greater understanding of the importance of treaties in Ontario. Treaties negotiated in Ontario over the past 250 years are the foundation of the relationship between governments and Indigenous peoples. They represent a mutual commitment to building a prosperous future for everyone. Historical treaties are important to the ongoing relationship between the Crown and First Nations and are still relevant today. By building understanding of these agreements, we are moving towards reconciliation with Indigenous people. This helps create equitable and respectful relationships, enabling a better way forward together.

Treaties Recogntion Week 2020

Treaties Recognition Week also responds to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action to increase treaty awareness. The Living Library program provides an opportunity for students and members of the public to receive teachings from Elders across the province. As a result of the COVID-19 emergency and the related restrictions around in-person gatherings the Ministry of Indigenous Affairs will be facilitating a series of virtual events in 2020.
