UWag Presents: Skawennati From Skyworld to Cyberspace

Running: September 12- October 26, 2019

Artist Presentation: September 13, 12-1pm in ECH 1219

In From Skyworld to Cyberspace, artist Skawennati (Mohawk, turtle clan) traces a line from our place of origin somewhere in the heavens to the virtual realm, one of the newest territories on Earth. Investigating concepts of time and self, Skawennati engages various mechanisms of gaming and play, interweaving traditional Mohawk stories and ritual objects with new technologies and processes through representations of avatars, most notably her online persona, which she has maintained for over a decade in the virtual world, Second Life. From Skyworld to Cyberspace is a result of Skawennati’s continuing investigation of cultural construction, contemporary Indigenous self-representation in cyberspace, and of our relationships with the digital world.
Peace Week 2019

Peace Week is an initiative that begun at Conrad Grebel University College which includes a series of community events surrounding the International Day of Peace. Indigenous Speaker Series Presents: Jesse Thistle

The Indigenous Speaker Series is proud to present Jesse Thistle, a Metis-Cree-Scot from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and author of bestselling memoir, From the Ashes. His scholarship is focused on intergenerational and historic trauma of the Metis people, and will speak to his own personal experience with homelessness
Kindred Credit Union Centre for Peace Advancement: Catalyzing Collaboration 5th Anniversary Celebration

You are invited to join in celebrating the 5th Anniversary of the Kindred Credit Union Centre for Peace Advancement with refreshments inspired by the many countries the Centre has been connected with. This will be a time to remember the impacts from the past five years, reconnect with individuals and organizations that have collectively shaped our work, and re-imagine what it means to advance peace in the Waterloo Region and beyond.

How to Establish a Just Society

The World Religions Conference (WRC) is a multi-faith event which brings together well known scholars from the world's major religions to speak on a common topic.This year's theme is "How to Establish a Just Society".

HeForShe Writing Contest


Submission deadline: October 1, 2019

A heads up, submissions for the the fourth and FINAL year of the HeForShe writing contest are due October 1, 2019. This year writing will be based around the idea of legacy as it relates to intersectional gender equity. The top submission in each category (poetry, creative non-fiction, and fiction) will be awarded a $500 prize. Selected submissions will be included in the University of Waterloo Anthology on gender equity.

Resume and Cover Letter Writing

The Center for Career Action is hosting a Resume and Cover Letter Writing workshop for graduate students! Through discussion and hands-on activities in this half-day workshop, you will learn how to prepare an effective resume and cover letter by analyzing job descriptions, assessing the relevance of your transferable skills, and articulating these transferable skills in an action-oriented way.
How to Interview Effectively

When: September 25, 2019 10:30am- 12:00pm
Where: TC 2218
 
In this interactive workshop, you'll practice translating academic language to industry language, apply strategies for answering interview questions and evaluate the effectiveness of responses to interview questions.

Jobs and Volunteer Opportunities

Mennonite Coalition for Refugee Support's Ride for Refugee
 
When: October 5, 2019 8:00am-1:00pm
 
The Mennonite Coalition for Refugee Support (MCRS) will be participating in the Ride for Refugee a family-friendly cycling and walking fundraising event for displaced persons.
The MCRS is a not-for-profit organization that helps people from over 40 countries who are seeking refuge. MCRS assists them with the refugee claim process, connecting them with the community for legal and settlement needs, and advocates for a just outcome, making sure their voices are heard.

Coping Skills Seminars

These are designed to help you challenge your thinking, hone your skills, and provide you with resources to cope with life's challenges. Topics include: cultivating resilience, challenging thinking, managing emotions, and changing behaviour.
Alleviating Anxiety

When: Starting September 25, 2019

Campus Wellness also offers a seminar on alleviating anxiety, which will help you learn strategies to manage stress and anxiety. A CBT and mindfulness-based seminar, it is designed to help you better understand your anxiety, its causes, and the factors that maintain it.

Notes

Graduate Student Self- Guided Tour

The Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs has launched a self-guided campus tour lasting approximately 30mins to an hour. It is designed to help graduate students familiarize themselves with main campus and showcase important resources and services available to you. Beginning at the new ION station, the tour will guide you to eleven buildings across campus (and highlight their food and coffee shops!) before ending at the Graduate House.
