Fees

MPACS tuition varies according to residency status and attendance status. Tuition is payable on a term-by-term basis and excludes incidental fees, which are additional non-tuition fees charged to all University of Waterloo students. Students can choose to opt out of optional incidental fees by the opt out deadline each term. Visit the tuition fee schedule for a detailed breakdown of fees per term.

Financial Aid

The MPACS program provides a number of scholarships and bursaries to eligible students. Students accepted into the program are automatically considered for entry-based awards, which are contingent on full-time attendance, academic standing, and eligibility. Students are also invited to pursue application-based awards, which require independent applications, and external awards as per availability. Finally, students can also seek additional support through loans and needs-based funding.

Global Conflict Management and Transformation Award

This award supports and promotes the training of community leaders from areas of conflict around the world in theories and practical methods of conflict management and transformation. Funds will be used to offset costs of education for students from areas of conflict while they are enrolled in PACS courses or Certificate Program in Conflict Management courses at Conrad Grebel University College.

 Award Criteria

  • Students enrolled in the MPACS program.
  • Students originating from areas of conflict.
  • Students who are providing leadership or have the potential for leadership in conflict management and transformation in their home community.

Size of Award

Approximately $5,000. 


Gopal Family MPACS Fund

This award supports MPACS students pursuing creative responses to global issues, with priority given to international students and students who indicate interest in completing an internship focused on global issues of peace and conflict.

International Tuition Scholarship

Limited funding is available to cover some tuition costs for international students who demonstrate academic excellence and relevant experience. The award amount is variable and information will be made available to successful applicants to the program.

Lina Wohlgemut Award

This award offers assistance to students from developing countries who expect to return to their home country to serve/work there, or students interested in service in the third world or developing countries.

Award Criteria

  • Developing country students studying in the Peace and Conflict Studies program at CGUC. 
  • Developing country students studying primarily at CGUC. 
  • Students interested in service in developing countries.
  • Students interested in service within the context of the church.

Malcolm X PACS Scholarship 

This scholarship supports a student or students enrolled in the Master of Peace and Conflict studies at Conrad Grebel University College at the University of Waterloo, who demonstrate commitment to social and racial justice.

Award Criteria 

  • Students enrolled in good standing in the Master of Peace and Conflict Studies (MPACS) program at the College. 
  • A self-identified Black person, Indigenous person, or persons who identify with racialized groups who have experienced economic hardship and/or social disadvantage.
  • Students who have demonstrated commitment to social justice, inter-racial harmony and inter-faith dialogue through on-campus or off-campus volunteer activities.
  • Students who are actively committed to student leadership in MPACS. 

Size of Award

Approximately $1,000.

Miller Hope Award

This endowed fund will be used to support students enrolled in the MPACS program who demonstrate an interest in exploring ideas of peace and religion in their studies. Priority will be given to international students.

MPACS Impact Award

This award supports students enrolled in the MPACS program who demonstrate the potential to make a significant impact in advancing peace following the completion of their MPACS studies. Ideally, the award would be granted to students who are pursuing an internship during their program of study. This award is given to international students in good standing or students who have arranged an international internship placement.

Size of Award

Typically, one award of approximately $5,000 or two awards of equivalent value.

Rotary Peace Scholarship Award

This award supports the training of graduate students and community leaders from conflict-affected areas outside North America, with priority given to international students.

Award Criteria

  • Full-time students in the MPACS program originating from conflict-affected areas outside North America.
  • Demonstrated history of civic engagement and leadership in the area of conflict management.
  • Committed to working in the area of peace and conflict transformation after graduation.

Size of Award

Approximately $10,000.

Schultz Huxman MPACS Award

This award is to support students enrolled in the MPACS program who demonstrate the potential to make a significant impact in advancing peace following the completion of their MPACS studies.

Award Criteria

  • Full-time international students in the MPACS program who personify academic excellence and commitment to peace and are in need of financial support.
  • International students who have demonstrated significant life achievements in the promotion of peace and who will enrich the MPACS program.
  • Full-time students in the MPACS program who demonstrate a commitment to apply their peace education and life experience in their communities and are in need of financial support.
  • Students who are pursuing an internship during their program of study.

Vic and Rita Krueger Family MPACS Award

This award is for students who demonstrate a commitment to the ideals of the PACS program through a letter of application that outlines personal experience in peace issues, goals for study and for long term career aspirations.

Award Criteria

  • Students enrolled in the MPACS program.
  • Students who qualify for Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF) funding through the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP).
  • Students who demonstrate a commitment to the ideals of the PACS program.

Size of Award

Approximately $1,000.

Application-Based Awards

Mennonite Diversity Award

To make an educational experience at Conrad Grebel accessible to Mennonite students from culturally diverse backgrounds and to aid Conrad Grebel in attracting a student body that is more reflective of the cultural diversity within Mennonite Church Canada.

Award Criteria

  • Students from a Mennonite congregation attended predominantly by recent immigrants or,
  • Students who are, or whose family are, recent immigrants attending a Mennonite congregation or,
  • Indigenous students with a connection to the Mennonite Church.

Size of Award

Typically, one award of $5,000 or two awards worth $2,500 each.

Recent immigrants refers to individuals or their families who immigrated to Canada after 1975.
Students receiving this award may re-apply for the award in subsequent years.


MPACS Internship Award

This award is available to MPACS students who have been approved to pursue an Internship as part of their program plan for course credit.

Award Size

Amount varies according to internship category and budget availability.

PACS 626 Certificate Program Bursary

This award offers financial assistance to students with a confirmed place in designated Conflict Management Certificate Workshops.

Award Criteria

  • Student is enrolled as a full time/part time student in MPACS.
  • Student has permission from the Academic Advisor to enroll.
  • Student is aware there are additional costs (in excess of the bursary and tuition).
  • Student is responsible for the full workshop fee (including bursary) in the event the student completes the workshop but does not complete the academic component.

Up to $400 per workshop (maximum two applications per student)

Social Justice Internship Fund

This award provides support for students in the MPACS program who are completing an approved internship as part of their studies. The fund prioritizes unpaid internships aligned with the mission, vision, and values of the MPACS program.

Award Criteria

  • Be enrolled in good standing in the MPACS program.
  • Be approved to complete an internship as part of PACS 625.
  • Identify as having financial need and/or belonging to an equity-deserving group, including international, Indigenous, racialized, 2SLGBTQ+, single-parent students and students with disabilities.

Size of Award

Up to $2,500.

External Awards

External awards are pursued independently of entry-based awards and application-based awards.


GSPA Awards Database

Students can explore the awards database maintained by Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs for additional funding as per availability.


Graduate Research Awards for Disarmament, Arms Control and Non-Proliferation

Graduate Research Awards for Disarmament, Arms Control and Non-Proliferation are offered by The Simons Foundation Canada and the International Security Research and Outreach Programme (ISROP) of Global Affairs Canada (GAC).

A total of four awards of $5,000 are available to Canadian Master’s and/or Doctoral candidates to support the independent research and writing of an academic paper responding to a specific Non-Proliferation, Arms Control and Disarmament (NACD) topic. Awards also include domestic travel support to Ottawa where successful candidates will present their completed papers during a special event at Global Affairs Canada Headquarters.


Katherine Lemke Heinrichs Scholarship

The scholarship is intended fourth year undergraduate or graduate students and promotes education in areas of peace and conflict transformation, international human rights, and law and policy that relate to refugees and displaced persons. This award is for up to $2000, distributed annually


W.L. Mackenzie King Memorial Scholarship

The Mackenzie King Open Scholarship is open to graduates of any Canadian university who engage in (commence or continue) graduate study (mater's or doctoral) in any field, in Canada or elsewhere. 

One Open Scholarship is awarded annually. Its value has lately been $8500 but is subject to change. Applications are due February 1.

Loans and Needs-Based Funding

Loans and needs-based funding are pursued indepndently of entry-based awards and application-based awards.


Student Loans

Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and protected persons resident in Ontario may be eligible for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), a financial aid program that helps subsidise university studies through grants and student loans.

International students may pursue funding through loan providers such as MPOWER Financing.

Financial Need Funding

The University of Waterloo offers additional funding opportunities to graduate students who demonstrate financial need. While these opportunities are supported and administered by Waterloo, funding for these programs is limited and dependent on eligibility.

Additional Funding Opportunities

Marking Assistants

Calls for applications are periodically released for a limited number of Marking Assistant positions. Typically consisting of 30-90 hours of paid work over the course of a term, Marking Assistants work with a PACS instructor and provide assistance marking undergraduate course assignments.

Peace Scholars

Calls for applications are periodically released for a limited number of Peace Scholar positions. These are research assistant positions for students who will aid and assist a faculty member at Grebel with a designated research project.
