Over
6
million
Canadians
will
have
arthritis
by
2026.
Currently,
43%
of
Canadians
live
with
arthritis
at
age
65;
this
number
jumps
to
55%
at
age
75.
Compared
to
any
other
chronic
health
condition
in
Canada,
arthritis
creates
the
most
pain,
mobility
restrictions,
disability,
depression,
and
dependence.
Exercise
is
ideal
to
boost
mobility
in
all
older
adults
with
arthritis
–
but
we
face
an
important
challenge.
While
exercise
reduces
pain
and
improves
physical
function
as
well
as
any
medication,
intense
and
repetitive
exercise
can
worsen
arthritis
via
exposure
to
excessive
knee
loads.
My research uses biomechanics to optimize exercise as a primary management strategy among older adults, particularly those with chronic joint pain. I will share our recent work aimed at optimizing exercise prescription to meet the unique needs of older adults with arthritis.
