What: Alzheimer's Disease - Novel Treatment Strategies

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia. As per the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, close to 564,000 Canadians are living with dementia costing approximately $10.4 billion in health care costs to the economy. These numbers are expected to rise sharply in the coming years due to an aging population and increasing life span. Unfortunately, the current treatment options provide only symptomatic relief and do not cure AD. These facts mandate the need to develop novel diagnostics and therapeutics to treat and possibly cure AD. In this regard, a brief overview on AD pathophysiology and efforts to discover and develop treatment strategies that are being carried out at the School of Pharmacy will be discussed.
