Osteoporotic fractures, low muscle mass and other chronic musculoskeletal conditions contribute to significant health and economic burden in Canada's aging population. Age-related changes in appearance and body shape may promote restrictive eating and desire for weight loss through diet and exercise, leading to muscle and bone loss, functional declines and a higher risk of fractures. Despite substantial research on body image dissatisfaction, nutritional deficiency and bone loss in younger adults; similar research in individuals who are at a higher risk of falls and fracture is scarce. Older adults with goals of weight management and fracture prevention may need tailored interdisciplinary strategies for health behaviour change while optimizing muscle and bone strength, especially in the presence of frailty, pain and mobility limitations. This Lunch 'n' Learn session will: 1) provide an overview of age-related changes in muscle and bone strength and their contribution to frailty and fracture risk; 2) describe the influence of weight control behaviours on body composition and bone health during aging; 3) discuss exercise as a strategy for improving mobility and physical function in individuals at high risk of fracture; and 4) explore weight and body image perceptions and nutrition behaviours in older adults with osteoporosis.
