In April 2012, the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) raised questions regarding the governance structure of the Balsillie School of International Affairs (BSIA) as it pertains to academic integrity. CAUT threatened to censure the administrations of the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University in the event its concerns were left unaddressed.

On Saturday, November 24, CAUT voted unanimously to drop its consideration of censure, having been fully satisfied by a Memorandum of Understanding provided by BSIA’s partner institutions, in which the partners clearly described the BSIA governance agreement’s iron-clad protection for academic freedom and integrity.

Waterloo acknowledges the collaborative and collegial nature of the discussions between the university partners and CAUT that resulted in this positive outcome.

The University of Waterloo is and will remain firmly committed to protecting academic freedom and integrity.  As the university works to develop new and innovative partnerships to support its teaching and research mission, and to better serve our communities, academic integrity remains a fundamental value.
