Biography
Patricia (Tricia) O'Malley was Chair of the Canadian Accounting Standards Board (AcSB) from 2009-10 and its first full-time Chair from 1999-2001. Ms. O’Malley was a founding member of the International Accounting Standards Board (2001-07) and its Director of Implementation Activities from 2007-09. She chaired the International Forum of Accounting Standard Setters, an informal association of bodies with a responsibility for setting or reviewing accounting standards in their various jurisdictions, from 2011-16. Previously, Ms. O’Malley was for 17 years a partner in the National Department of Professional Practice of KPMG Canada.
Ms. O’Malley’s professional activities include acting as an expert witness on the application of accounting standards in cases involving securities class actions and contractual disputes in both Canada and the United States, advising three Auditors General of Canada, serving and a member and chairing the Actuarial Standards Oversight Council of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and serving as a member of the Accounting Standards Oversight Council.
Her involvement in Not For Profit organizations includes serving on the Board of the Toronto YWCA, acting as president of the Canadian Academic Accounting Association, chairing the Board of the Ontario Division of the MS Society, serving as a member of the National MS Society Board and chairing the Board of the Stratford Summer Music festival.
Most recently, Ms. O’Malley was a Member of the Board of Assuris (2015-2024), the not for profit organization that protects the benefits provided by insurance policies issued by life insurance companies operating in Canada. She also chaired the Audit Committee of The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda (2017-2024).
In 2012, Ms. O’Malley was awarded The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. In 2016 she received an honorary degree from the University of Waterloo “In recognition of her outstanding contributions to building the structures necessary for public trust in global financial markets.” She was inducted into the Canadian Accounting Hall of Fame as a “Leader” in 2022.
