Winter 2017 Lecture Series Presentation

Wednesday, March 8, 2017 1:00 pm - 1:00 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

We are delighted to announce that this year's Winter lecture Series will be given by Dr. Wojciech Tokarz,

'“Indians” and Democracy: Indigenous Argentineans and Post-Dictatorship Culture'

Protest o march of indigenous people
This presentation will focus on ways post-dictatorship literature, in particular the historical novel and non-fiction literature, affected the changes in the perception of Indigenous peoples in Argentinean culture. Some literary critics see the historical novel in Latin America as a medium that allows oppressed groups to enter historical discourse, but it is important to note that in Argentina the genre simultaneously reproduces structures of colonialism. Meanwhile, the non-fiction literature proposes a critical and fresh look at issues of representation, stresses the role of Indigenous communities in contemporary Argentina, and links their status to the state of democracy in the country.

Dr. Tokarz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Modern Languages, St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, Nova Scotia. He is a specialist in the field of Indigenous People in Latin America.  Presently he is working on the project The Re-Invention of Argentina: The Representation of the Amerindian in Post-Dictatorship Argentinean Culture funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

Please join us on Wednesday March 8th 2017 in HH 1102, 1pm-2:20pm Refreshments at 1pm, presentation at 1:30pm.

Presentation will be in English.

All are welcome!
