We are thrilled to announce that our very own Rafael Ponciano will be beginning a Masters’ degree in Spanish in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Toronto come this September. Rafael is graduating this April with a B.A. Honours in Spanish and Latin American Studies and three Minors (Music, German, and Cultural Identities).
The Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies would like to extend our sincere congratulations to our graduating student of Spring 2022 and to those students who have completed their Minors or Diplomas in Spanish Language or a Minor in Cultural Identities. We are extremely proud of you and wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
It is almost time to kick off the much anticipated 2022 Latin American Film Festival! The first film will be screened live online on January 19th at 7:00 PM, and will include a brief introduction by Professor Mario Boido who will facilitate a post-screening discussion of the film.
Through TV dramas like Narcos and El Chapo, the lives and names of some of the most infamous Latin American drug kingpins have now become familiar to non-Spanish speaking audiences around the world. Rich in detail on some of the most flamboyant aspects of their extravagant lifestyles, these shows paint a complex picture of what life and death looks like for many men in contemporary Latin America.

It is with great pride and appreciation that the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies recognizes Professor Regina Vera Quinn as a student nominated Spanish instructor for National Teach Spanish Day on September 30, 2020. This event was launched by the American Associations of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) and nominations obtained through Vista Higher Learning.
The faculty, staff, and students in the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies would like to congratulate Dr. Monica Leoni, Department Chair and Associate Professor, for receiving the 2019 Outstanding Performance Award. This award was created to recognize and celebrate faculty members for outstanding contribution in teaching and scholarship.
