“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’ ”- Martin Luther King Jr.
My name is Yessenia Guerrero and I’m here to learn and support the efforts that have already begun to flourish thanks to the collective work of the members of the UWSA. I have been at UWaterloo, in various capacities since 2011; I’ve been a student, a former lecturer, and now a staff member. I am excited to be of service and contribute, alongside all of you, to shape a better workplace for all of us.
Some additional points about me: I love languages and I speak two fluently (English, Spanish) and two others intermediately (French, Italian). Besides my position at UW, I am a Spanish/English Translator/Interpreter for refugees and immigrants who are new to the Kitchener-Waterloo area, working as a liaison between them and different Immigration Law Firms. I earned an Honours BA from UWaterloo, and a Masters from Guelph University. I am also a Program Area Lead for the EDI-R office and I am committed to integrating ant-racism practices, as well as other efforts, into my work both within and outside of UW. I am Mestiza, a mix of Indigenous (Central American) and Spanish descent.
Fun fact: My last name “Guerrero” is Spanish for “Warrior”, just like our school mascot!
