On Saturday October 22, 2016, over 300 people were treated to an outstanding performance of Indonesian music and dance at the Humanities Theatre, hosted by the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia and Studies in Islam, Renison University College.
Studies in Islam regularly offers cultural events to the communities of Kitchener-Waterloo, the most recent being a play, I am Rohingya, which performed to a full audience at the Theatre of the Arts in April 2016.
The Indonesian Cultural Show offered dances originating in Bali, North Sumatra, and Jakarta. Colourful costumes, graceful yet powerful dancing, and energizing music--all combined to keep the audience captivated with the beauty and skill of the performers.
Musical performances included artist-in-residence I Dewa Made Suparta along with students from Grebel Community Balinese Gamelan, who began the evening with traditional and contemporary compositions.
The event was also supported by Permika Toronto, the official Indonesian Student Association in Toronto, and the Indonesian Students Association at the University of Waterloo.
