Fundamentals of International Aviation provides a broad introduction to the international air transport system and the different activities and professions that make global aviation possible. 

Aviation Sustainability explores the environmental, social and economic dimensions of sustainability and how they influence aviation operations, organizations, policy and long-term planning. 

The programmes complement one another but can be completed independently. Learners may choose a full programme or individual topics that align with their interests, responsibilities or professional goals. 

A micro-credential is a short, focused course that develops knowledge in a specific subject area. 

Most micro-credentials in these programmes take approximately two hours to complete. The Introduction to Aviation Sustainability micro-credential takes approximately three hours. 

Each micro-credential can be completed as a standalone learning experience or stacked with the other micro-credentials to complete a full programme.

No. Learners may register for individual micro-credentials based on their interests, professional responsibilities or learning goals. 

Learners seeking a broader understanding may complete all 10 Fundamentals of International Aviation micro-credentials or all 11 Aviation Sustainability micro-credentials and satisfy ICAO’s programme requirements to earn the corresponding full programme certificate.

The micro-credentials can be taken independently. 

Learners who are new to aviation sustainability are encouraged to begin with Introduction to Aviation Sustainability before progressing to more specialized sustainability topics, but it is not a prerequisite. 

Most individual micro-credentials take approximately two hours to complete. 

The complete Fundamentals of International Aviation programme takes approximately 20 hours, while the complete Aviation Sustainability programme takes approximately 25 hours. 

Actual completion time may vary depending on each learner’s background, pace and engagement with the activities. 

The programmes are suitable for: 

• students and individuals considering an aviation career; 

• professionals entering or transitioning into aviation; 

• current aviation professionals seeking broader industry knowledge; 

• educators and training professionals; 

• government, regulatory and non-governmental organization personnel; 

• aviation managers and industry leaders; and 

• professionals in related sectors who interact with aviation. 

Learners do not need to be pilots or work in an operational aviation role to benefit from the programmes. 

No previous aviation experience is required for Fundamentals of International Aviation, and no previous sustainability knowledge is required for Aviation Sustainability. 

Both programmes provide accessible, foundational learning for people from a wide range of academic, professional and geographic backgrounds.

The courses are self-paced and completed online through ICAO’s training platform. There are no scheduled classes, allowing learners to progress through the material according to their own schedules within the access period provided by ICAO. 

The courses include multimedia lessons, knowledge checks, case examples and applied learning activities. 

ICAO currently provides three months of access to each complete programme, beginning on the registration date. 

Learners should confirm the current access period and registration conditions on the applicable ICAO programme page before registering.

Each micro-credential includes an online final assessment. Learners must currently achieve a grade of at least 80% and are permitted up to three attempts. 

Learners completing a full programme must also satisfy the programme requirements identified by ICAO. 

Learners who successfully complete an individual micro-credential receive an ICAO e-Certificate for that course. 

Learners who successfully complete all required micro-credentials and any additional programme requirements receive the corresponding ICAO programme certificate. 

These are professional-learning credentials and do not confer University of Waterloo academic credit. Acceptance toward professional-development requirements, academic programmes or employment qualifications is determined by the receiving institution, employer or professional body.
