The Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics supports accessible online learning for current and aspiring aviation professionals around the world.
Developed by the University of Waterloo and delivered through the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), these programmes allow learners to build knowledge through short, stackable micro-credentials.
Programmes offered:
- Fundamentals of International Aviation
Developed through a long-standing partnership between Waterloo and ICAO, Fundamentals of International Aviation provides a foundation for understanding how the international air transport system works.
The programme includes 10 stackable micro-credentials exploring the organizations, activities and professional disciplines that work together to support safe, efficient and sustainable global aviation.
Learners may complete individual micro-credentials based on their interests or complete all 10 as a full programme.

- Aviation Sustainability
Aviation Sustainability introduces the environmental, social and economic dimensions of sustainability and examines their importance across aviation organizations, operations, policy and long-term planning.
The programme includes 11 micro-credentials that can be completed individually or combined as a full programme. No previous sustainability knowledge is required.
Introduced at the outset of the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport 2026–2035, the programme supports the development of knowledge needed for a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient transport future.
