Dr. Rino Rappuoli is theChief Scientist and Head External R&D at GSK Vaccines, Siena, Italy. He was awarded a 2017 Canada Gairdner International Award "For pioneering the genomic approach, known as reverse vaccinology, used to develop a vaccine against meningococcus B which has saved many lives worldwide."

Plants intimately associate with diverse bacteria. Plant-associated bacteria have ostensibly evolved genes that enable them to adapt to plant environments. However, the identities of such genes are mostly unknown, and their functions are poorly characterized.
