Prepare for first year

Your student’s transition to university begins before they ever set foot on campus.

From choosing housing to getting academically prepared, your student will have many decisions to make and administrative tasks to stay on top of over the summer.

Your student will be the point of contact for the University. It will be their responsibility to stay on top of important tasks and deadlines.

We know you may be planning to lend a hand, too. Here are a few things you to check-in about as you prepare for September together.

Remind your student to check their email

The University starts emailing new students in June with important tasks to complete.

Encourage your student to get into the routine of checking their email.

At the end of June your student will be prompted to set up their UWaterloo student email. After that, most University communications will be sent to that student email address.

If your student hasn’t heard from us in a while, remind them to check their student email inbox. (Bonus – this comes with free Microsoft 365 access!)

Waterloo Ready and Orientation

Waterloo Ready is your student’s university pre-arrival guide. It includes:

Waterloo Orientation is a week of in-person events that welcome your student to campus.

  • Registration opens in August
  • Events begin during Campus Housing move-in and take place over their first week on campus
  • Includes an opportunity to register for International Orientation

Get to know the University of Waterloo

At Waterloo we think differently, act with purpose and work together.

Your student is joining a community of 42,000+ students. They'll be part of programs, faculties, schools, affiliated institutions (also known as the university colleges) and so much more.

Don't worry—there won't be a test! As your student settles in, they'll fill you on what you need to know about their place at Waterloo.
