The Municipal Climate Adaptation Certificate is a forward-thinking initiative by the University of Waterloo’s Climate Institute.
The key audience for this certificate is Indigenous community members and municipal staff working in day-to-day planning, finance, engineering, infrastructure management, health, and governance roles.
As a University of Waterloo alumni, you are invited to apply and join a network of professionals advancing their climate adaptation knowledge and skills. Through expert-led, practical courses (available in both English and French), you will gain the skills needed to drive locally tailored, equity-informed climate solutions.
The certificate courses have been designed by leading climate adaptation educators at the University of Waterloo, with advice and critical support from Canadian municipalities, government and non-profits. Course materials and assignments emphasize real-world examples and case studies to ensure relevance and practicality to the Canadian municipal context.
On completion of this certificate, you will be able to:
- Connect climate action opportunities to your specific role
- Describe climate science, climate risks, climate impacts, and climate adaptation solutions
- Identify climate adaptation needs specific to vulnerable populations within your community
- Assess and prioritize climate risks and service vulnerabilities according to community needs
- Identify strategies to address anti-racism, equity, diversity, and inclusion through climate action
- Identify nature-based adaptation solutions and co-benefits
- Develop adaptation strategies that will have a positive and long-term impact on your community without undermining other environmental and social programs
- Develop strategies to meaningfully engage key stakeholders on equity-informed climate action
