An eye opening experience with Alumni Relations

This past winter, I completed my first co-op term as the Communications and Marketing Assistant for Alumni Relations. I feel like through the course of my time here, I have developed a deeper grasp of the written and interpersonal communication skills that are needed to succeed in both my academics and pursuing a career in the future.

My Experience Working with Alumni Relations

I am in my first co-op work term as the Communication and Marketing Assistant for the Alumni Relations department of the University of Waterloo. Before coming into this work term, I had very little understanding of how the department operated. The only clue I had was that Alumni Relations deals with donations made by alumni to support the University. I really cannot say the same anymore.

Let me tell you a little about the newest role added to the Alumni Relations team. My new role, Alumni Officer, Volunteer Engagement was created in the last year as our volunteer programs have continued to grow.

I never really thought about being an alumna during my first few years as a UWaterloo student. Working as a co-op student for Alumni Relations was definitely an eye opener for me. Who knew there was a whole extra chapter in our lives that would begin after convocation?

I am a fourth year Therapeutic Recreation student and I am currently on my last co-op term working for Alumni Relations.

As a 3rd year Legal Studies and Business student when I began my co-op term in Alumni Relations, I was often asked “Why Alumni Relations?”
