Dear 18-Year-Old Me

Emma in the House of Commons

That’s a wrap! After five years at the University of Waterloo, I am saying my goodbyes and moving on. I know people will tell you that your time at university will fly by, but you won’t believe them. In the middle of exam season, your time in school will seem endless. But let me tell you, life has a way of sneaking up on you, and before you know it, you’ll be walking across the stage at convocation.

A Reflection of My UWaterloo Experience as Convocation Approaches

When I first started my journey at the University of Waterloo five years ago, I was 18-years-old and had no idea what I wanted to do with my life.

Oh the places you’ll go!

I still remember the very first day I worked at UWaterloo’s convocation. I had just wrapped up a co-op term at the Registrar’s Office and was provided with the opportunity to usher during the Spring 2012 convocation ceremonies.

Convocation: The Student Story

In the past, Alumni Relations has shared behind the scene stories of what goes into making the University’s bi-annual convocation activities such a success. What we haven’t shared is the student story.

Stay Connected with Co-op Connection

With the passing of October’s 109th convocation ceremonies, the University of Waterloo was pleased to welcome its newest members to the alumni club. Convocation is time that reminds all alumni to stay connected to the University of Waterloo.

No Such Thing as an Unassisted Goal

Over my four years at Waterloo, one of the things that I learned about myself, that I’ll definitely remember, is that I like to be busy. For me, it was just a lifestyle in high school; it just made sense to join clubs and committees, and I never gave it a second thought. Somewhere during second year I realized that I like to be busy.

A Year in Review- From Alumni Relations to You

Wow what a year it has been! Our team has been keeping busy all year excitedly providing our valued alumni all the engagement opportunities we could think of.

This year we had one of our best Reunion’s ever with over 4000 attendees as alumni came back with family and friends to revisit, reunite, and relive their Waterloo days.

My University of Waterloo Journey

Throughout my undergraduate years, I went from studying the great works of philosophy, to Buddhism, to cognitive psychology and neuroscience, to human physiology, and finally to how human physiology and psychology influence one another. I did well in my courses despite lacking a relevant background. I learned that doing what interests you most combined with a drive to do it really well is often enough to overcome a lack of experience and relevant background. The help of great mentors such as: Dr. William Abbott, Dr. Michael Dixon, and Dr. Richard Hughson certainly helped!
