An Interview with the Games Institute

The Games Institute (GI) is a formal research centre that came into existence in June 2011. Staff, students and faculty that are involved with the GI specialize in games related research, and, much like games research, are multidisciplinary hailing from all disciplines.

Motivating with Games at UWaterloo

At the Games Institute at the University of Waterloo, we understand that games can be used to motivate players to part-take in real world (aka non-game) activities.

Games motivate by providing three things: the sensation of being and becoming competent in a skill, the feeling of being in control, and by providing social contact.

A Career in Games

Jason Hawreliak (Ph.D., 2013) is an Assistant Professor of Game Studies at Brock University’s Centre for Digital Humanities. He is also a co-founder and editor of the online game studies periodical First Person Scholar.

The Games Institute at UWaterloo and Why We Need It

The Games Institute officially came into being in June 2011.
