Theatre of the Beat was founded by University of Waterloo grads Johnny Wideman (BA ’09), Rebecca Steiner (BA ’12), Kimberlee Walker (BA ’12), and Leah Harder (BA ’09) in 2011. They got their start on campus, creating a biographical play about Conrad Grebel archivist Sam Steiner (BA ’73). The show was entitled Gadfly: Sam Steiner Dodges the Draft and followed the transformation of a self-proclaimed bigot to social justice activist during the Vietnam war. The company has been ‘staging change’ ever since.

Creating MOMENTS OF CLARITY

Moments of Clarity - Film Cover

Collecting the Ghosts of Waterloo and Staging our Memories

Robet Motum

In preparing this post, I have read dozens of other alumni contributions to this site. If this blog is any proof, we all have fond memories and sentimental stories which we have carried with us since our time at the University of Waterloo; stories which have, somehow, shaped who we have become.  As a theatre artist and researcher, I have a love of stories.

UWaterloo to New York Broadway

The University of Waterloo is known as one of the top universities in Canada, especially for Math and Engineering. But few people realize that UWaterloo has a Department of Drama and Speech and Communication that also has a great reputation.
