The event will include a reception and fireside chat between Dr. Jagdeep Singh Bachher (BASc ’93, MASc ’94, PhD ’00), chancellor of Waterloo, and Sir Ron Kalifa, vice chair of private equity at Brookfield. Together, they will discuss the role of global capital in driving innovation, sustainability and large-scale transformation.
Held in one of London’s key financial hubs, the reception will provide an opportunity for attendees to connect with each other, hear from influential voices in global investment and innovation and learn more about Waterloo’s evolving role on the world stage.

Dr. Jagdeep Singh Bachher (BASc ’93, MASc ’94, PhD ’00)
Chancellor of the University of Waterloo, Chief Investment Officer and Vice President of Investments, University of California
Dr. Jagdeep Singh Bachher is a triple alum of the University of Waterloo and currently serves as the University’s 12th chancellor. He is chief investment officer and vice president of investments at the 10-campus University of California, where he oversees an investment portfolio of $164 billion. As chancellor, Bachher acts as the ceremonial head of the institution and is responsible for conferring degrees, certificates and diplomas on graduating students.
Sir Ron Kalifa
Vice Chair, Private Equity and Head of Financial Infrastructure Investing, Brookfield
Sir Ron Kalifa is a British entrepreneur, investor, and business leader known for his influential role in shaping the global financial technology landscape. He is Vice Chair and Head of Financial Infrastructure at Brookfield, driving the Financial Infrastructure global strategy. He was previously the Chairman of Network International, a FTSE company that delisted and was acquired by Brookfield in 2023. Ron is the Senior Independent Director of the Bank of England’s Court of Directors in 2019. He also holds the position of Non-executive director at InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG).
Sir Ron was Chief Executive Officer of Worldpay Group from 2002 to 2013, later serving as Vice Chairman. During his tenure, he led Worldpay’s transformation from a division of RBS into a global payments leader, overseeing its separation from RBS in 2010 and subsequent acquisitions by Vantiv (2017) and FIS (2019).
Beyond corporate leadership, Sir Ron has played a pivotal role in advancing the UK’s fintech ecosystem. Commissioned by the UK government, he authored the landmark Kalifa Review of UK Fintech (2021), which set out a national strategy for growth, innovation, and global competitiveness in the sector. He also sits on several not-for-profit boards, including as a Trustee and Chair of the Finance Committee for The Royal Foundation.
A graduate of Harvard Business School, Sir Ron’s contributions have been widely recognized. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2018 for services to financial services and technology and later knighted in 2022 for his continued contributions to finance and public service. He has received numerous accolades, including ranking third on the Financial Times EMpower Top 100 Ethnic Minority Leaders list, the Freedom of the City of London, and an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of East London. Sir Ron also chairs the Sport Committee within the UK Honours System’s Main Committee.
