Solidago petiolaris var. angusta

Narrow Leaved Downy Ragged Goldenrod

Solidago petiolaris var. angusta (Torr. & Gray) A. Gray is native to SE Kansas, Missouri, eastern Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, eastern Texas with scattered disjunct populations across Texas to N Coahuila, Mexico. Its phyllaries are lack hairs on the surface and are weakly to obviously resinous and shiny and minutely glandular, and sometimes spreading to reflexed distally.  Its leaves are variable in shape and color; some are much narrower than those of var. petiolaris, but can sometimes range to narrowly ovate; leaves can be green or shiny silvery.  Leaves can look green under some light conditions but be shiny silvery when viewed at a different angle. Inflorescence range from few headed arrays to elongated narrow many-headed arrays depending upon growing conditions.   Var. wardii also occurs further west, while var. petiolaris occurs from eastern Texas to Florida and North Carolina.  Ranges of distribution are shown on the S. petiolaris page.
