Abstract

Urolithiasis is one of the most common medical conditions afflicting 10-12% of the world’s population. The treatment of kidney stones has evolved over the last 40 years from an open surgical operation, involvingconsiderable patient morbidity, to a minimally invasive approach associated with a short hospital stay and an early return to full recovery. This progression has occurred as a result of numerous advancements in technology and the collaborative initiatives of bioengineers, urologic surgeons and the medical device industry. Improved endoscope design along with new energy sources such as lasers and numerous ancillary devices have revolutionized the treatment of kidney stones. The current surgical options include shockwave lithotripsy, percutaneous renal surgery and retrograde ureteroscopy. The relative role and indications for the various approaches and the associated technologies will be presented along with current trends in surgical management of urolithiasis.
